Differences between separators of СAD from impeller machines (ISM separators)

Manufacturers of ISM separators claim that the power consumption of the CAD separator is constant. They probably do not distinguish the concepts of nominal power vs. consumed power of electric motors. They knowingly misinform users when they claim that consumed current remains constant irrespective of a crop. However this is not true. When an engine runs unloaded (see motor characteristics), e.g. separation of small rape seeds, the consumed power is 30% of the rated value. For example, a motor with the nominal power of 5.5 kW installed on a fan of the separator CAD-10 consumes as little as 1.65 kW when the machine is used for rapeseeds. Rpm is the only thing that remains constant.
In our CAD separator, powerful air flow is injected through seed trays, so dust is sucked from the trays into the aspiration unit. In ISM machines, a large amount of dust penetrates to all trays with grain.
Our CAD separator uses a radial-flow (snail-type) medium-pressure (VR) fan located at the bottom. In the radial fan, air pressure reaches its maximum at its wall. To equalize the airflow, we use a chamber of a jet generator wherein one plane expands and, consequently, the air pressure is equalized. However to achieve better stabilization of the airflow both in the transverse and in the longitudinal sections, we have put a grid, although this solution might contribute to energy consumption. But we have taken this step consciously. As a result, the airflow comes to the jet generator evenly. This significantly improves the quality of grain separation. In ISM machines, even airflow cannot be achieved. What is an impeller? Ringed blades. The simplest example of the impeller is an ordinary axial fan inserted in a window. Such fan is a power unit of impeller machines. Let's now see how the air is distributed in "windows". There is no air flow in the center of the fan since there is motor there, there are no airflow on the corners since it should not be there... The maximum air flow is achieved near the ring. Fan blades rotate on the axis, either clockwise or counter-clockwise, twisting the air in a spiral. This adds significant heterogeneity in the transverse and longitudinal sections of the airflow. Since the distance between the impeller and nozzles is not large, the airflow does not have enough time to equalize. Such airflow could hardly separate grains by specific gravity. Dust is blown away and penetrates into almost all factions.
In our CAD separator, nozzles are designed so to create turbulence of the airflow. Although this also an energy-consuming solution, it provides a high-precision grain calibration by specific gravity. Use of nozzles varying by size allows us to achieve a gradual separation of the grain mass: small impurities are removed by small nozzles positioned on the top, and the specific gravity of particles to be separated increases as the air flows through jets. This helps to achieve high-quality separation of any grain or bulk material. In impeller machines, nozzles are used to direct the airflow and are of the same dimensions. Such design does not contribute to a quality separation of grain by specific gravity.
In 2001, long before ISM impeller separators have been marketed, we completed research studies at our Aeromekh plant with an impeller installed on our CAD separator. Although the manufacture of ISM-type machines would significantly reduce the production and labor costs, we deliberately refused from such machines since the separation quality achieved with ISM is much worse than the quality offered by CAD separators. The recent experiment was completed in 2009 when locksmiths working for our plant decided to test their invention. Having received negative results with the operation of an impeller compared to a CAD separator, our "grateful" workers stole the technical documentation and headed to Kharkiv. The first ISM machines appeared in 2010. ISM separators poorly competed with our CAD separators in the agro market until 2014 because the quality did not correspond to the claims. However the events in Ukraine in 2014 have blocked the operation of Aeromekh plant and our customers had nothing but switch to use of ISM separators. Taking advantage of our absence and the difficult situation in the country, manufacturers of ISM separators filled our niche to some extent. Today, when we are back in Ukraine, we have to explain many things to our prospective customers: why our CAD separator costs a little more. If you look at the weight and overall dimensions of CAD separators and ISM machines, you will see a significant difference. The weight of ISM separators is often by 40% less, while the absence of the vibrating tray and flags in front of the trays is promoted as an innovation and a cheaper solution. It's like taking off the wheels from a car and letting it go somehow… but cheaper.
Manufacturers of ISM separators install a voltage frequency converter on a separator and promote it as an invention. This significantly increases the costs of the separator. In addition, the frequency converter breaks down when the machine operates under dusty conditions and high air temperature. Aeromekh LLC has been offering the frequency converter on our CAD separators as an option, subject to customer’s request, since 2004. However about 90% of our customers do not use frequency converters at all. The design of our CAD separators allows them to build in a mechanical airflow power regulator (damper). This option is not available on impeller machines, so a frequency converter should be used instead.
ISM manufacturers often claim that a motor is located at the bottom in CAD separators, so dust and waste passes through the motor. Again, this is a kind of misinformation. A motor on a snail-type fan is located on the opposite side of the air intake area. Besides we use asynchronous closed-type motors which are not able to physically overheat due to waste and, as such, are not subject to wear and tear due abrasive dust.
Since 2001 Aeromekh has completed many research studies with our CAD separator and the influence of the specific gravity of seeds on their yield quality. Our findings have been used in many academic theses for PhD and doctoral degrees and published in many Ukrainian and European scientific journals. We use values and figures we have obtained in our thorough long-term research studies and we are responsible for every value as we know very well – our CAD separator is the only machine which gives such amazing results. Manufacturers of ISM separators did not hesitate to copy our studies (diagrams and tables) in full and claim them to be their own. But if you ask them how they have got such results, you would hardly get an answer about their research methods because we developed the methodology ourselves. Moreover, the technology of obtaining high-yielding seeds with our CAD separator is our own development – no one will tell you about it better than we can.
If you read the information above, you will see that CAD separators and ISM machines differ not only by the principle of operation, but also by the culture of manufacturing, the level of science and the approach based on fair competition. The good news is that we have developed very successful machinery that brings profit to all customers and pays off in a season of operation. And when our machinery is fabricated, it means that we are always ahead.
